Glazing Day

I spent a lot of time yesterday hand painting pendants, toggle clasps and charms.  The picture above in terra cotta and teal was serendipitous.  I didn't intend the teal to be quite that color and quickly added some more green to change it to my usual color.  But when I see it on the terra cotta clay, I see how great it looks.  Actually even better.  I may do more this way.  Of course colors change once I put on the clear glaze and fire them.

A few toggle clasps hand painted and drying before I put on the clear glaze.  I seem to never tire of taking photos of work in progress.  These should arrive in my Etsy store later this week.

And about the red flowers.  I have the glaze test strips cooling in the kiln right now.  I will get a chance to look at them about Noon today.  Can't wait.  And since waiting is hard, I glazed one flower before seeing the test strips.  Hope it comes out well.  I will share on BTW this week.
Hope you have a great Sunday.  I will be outside raking and  hopefully planting some Spinach and beets.

  6. Thank you all for writing in. I love hearing from you. I will post pics on BTW of results. So far the red not quite what I had wanted. But tried a few other ideas with another firing yesterday. Thanks for the great feed back on the Terra Cotta. Most apppreciated.
And yes, I did get into the garden and planted beets, spinach and carrots. Next week, after we dry up from the big rain storm coming our way, I will plant the lettuce and radish and onions.

  7. So are you able to re-glaze and re-fire if you want to try to change the color or is it once and a done deal? I really don't know squat about clay ;)

Yay! I wish I was planting veggies this year, but I will have to wait until we move :) Enjoy your garden's treats for me :)

  8. Genea and all,
Yes you can add a glaze color to an already fired piece. But, it is harder to get it to stick to the clay, since the surface is tighter, i.e. the clay pores are fused together during the original glaze firing. But at least one coat will go on fairly easily. I often do this to darken a color that I applied too lightly the first time. It would be hard to change a color this way, but not impossible. i.e. you could probably change yellow to green by putting blue on top of it.

  9. Sad but true the beautiful teal color was lost when I fired it with clear glaze on top. Went way dark. Will have to find a way of finishing it without a third firing. Thank you for all the great comments about the color.

  10. Oh bummer it didn't turn out the way you wanted. Thanks for filling us in on how clay and the colors work. I can't wait to see it. You know we all will probably love it considering we didn't have any expectations of how the colors would turn out ;)
