A Charming Exchange

A Charming Exchange by Kelly Snelling and Ruth Rae
I first became aware of this wonderful book because I was participating in a charm exchange organized by Lynn Davis ( see December 1, 2008 post). I checked it out on Amazon and now it is in my ever growing library of jewelry making books. The theme of this book is collaboration, a theme that embodies much of my life. I love the energy and creativity that collaboration can ignite. And so it is always with enthusiasm that I join in on collaborative ventures. As the book points out, you don't need to live in an artistic community to have opportunities to collaborate with other artists: the internet has many online art groups for you to join, with many different media to choose from. Ah! And the best part of collaborations is that you find new talents and new ideas inside of yourself that you might have never discovered otherwise. The authors refer to this as "creating fearlessly."
What has really endeared me to this book is the wide range of techniques that have come together in such unusual ways. Although the book is not a step-by-step instruction manual to the projects described, it does highlight some of the unusual techniques the artists have used to combine disparate objects into jewelry. Since I am always looking for ways to make non-jewelry objects into linkable entities for jewelry, this book has been a treasure trove of ideas for me. Some of the unusual links they give detailed instructions for that really intrigued me are : coiled jump rings, capacitator charms ( I had some of these lying around, i.e. the capacitators), making a wire basket, eye of god links ,wrapped stone links, bar loop links, baby swing links, decorative swirl links, wire orb links, and I promise you, many more that I haven't mentioned.

Below is a photo of some of the charms that I created especially for the Blessings Charm exchange that I have been participating in. I had never made hand built ceramic charms before so I am so pleased that I dared to "create fearlessly" and came up with these.

You can purchase A Charming Exchange at Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble. You will love it I am sure.

Etsy Mud Team Stamp Exchange

These are the three stamps I sent to Amy Esther as part of the Etsy Mud Team stamp exchange. She wrote about them in her blog yesterday. You can see Amy's ceramic work in her Etsy store here. Her blog and her work are very interesting and full of great colors and great food and delicious recipes. I love the name of her blog: In the Night Kitchen. Also one of my favorite Maurice Sendak's books.

Jewelry Art Exchange with Gaea, Lorelei, Joelle and Jennifer

A few weeks ago Gaea came up with the idea of a Jewelry /Art Exchange on her blog. I learned about this fun project from Lorelei's blog and wrote in to Gaea that I would like to participate. I am not quite sure of all the artists who have joined in but will add their names as I learn of them. So far I am the third person to add to this necklace. Below I have included pictures of the additions as they were made and by whom.

Lorelei's contribution (above) Joelle's contribution (above)

Mary Harding's contribution (ab0ve)

I added a small bird, a red gemstone, the green fiber chain, and the toggle clasp. I have really enjoyed this challenge. Can't wait to see how it turns out. The small bird and the toggle clasp are ceramic beads handmade by me. Now the necklace is going on its way to Jennifer Stumpf .

The New Year

I am thinking about Blessings as I start the New Year. I am planning on staying positive despite the many changes and difficulties in the world.
I have been working on my expression of Blessings from the bead/charm exchange I participated in recently with:

The photo above is the necklace I created with the art work we exchanged. I am choosing to wear them as a group on a necklace so that I can feel the power of these blessings and be more aware of what I am grateful for. It will be an important part of this year 2009. warmer climate.

You can read more about this bead/charm exchange here.

Happy Thanksgiving

I am posting a picture of my Blessings Necklace that I made with friends last year in an exchange. I hope you all have a wonderful day and that your life is full of blessings. I am thinking about all of us who made the lovely charms for this necklace, my family and friends today. I feel blessed to be a part of this wonderful online community of bloggers and artists.

Lynn Davis wrote about this Blessings Exchange originally last year and it was reposted for the ArtBeadScene recently and you can see pictures and have weblinks to all the participants here.

Bead Soup Blog Hop

Toggle Clasp by Diana Frey

Today is the Reveal of the 7th Bead Soup Blog Party.  This is the 4th year that I have participated in this long awaited event.  Our host and the originator of the Bead Soup Blog Party is Lori Anderson. Each person who participates is partnered with another beader and they exchange a set of quality  beads which must include a focal  and a clasp. I have always had wonderful Bead Soup partners and this year I have the good fortune to be paired with Diana Frey who is a very accomplished mixed media artist.  She sent me a dream package of  Bead Soup as you can see in the pictures below.

When I began planning what I would make with her lovely beads, I decided to focus in on the purples of the amethyst.  I was looking for a combination of rustic with Diana's sophisticated ornateness.  To achieve that effect I used patinaed copper wire which looks almost black and wire wrapped my handmade ceramic beads in various shades of green and Diana's lovely faceted amethyst and antique brass beads.

For the transition between the wire wrapped beads and Diana's gorgeous focal,  I used a  piece of copper tube that I altered and a piece of antique iron that I  purchased last Fall at a Flea Market in nearby Canada.

I used wire, double balled end extra long head pins that I made and some Wooly  Wire to attach the bars to the wire wrapping and the pendant.  I made a bail for the pendant out of a double extra extra long ball end 16 gauge head pin--a technique I learned from Deryn Mentock's Alchemy of Objects class.
And then to tie all the parts together visually I added a spiral green round bead I made from porcelain to the fabulously delicate dangles on Diana's pendant.

And all the parts together look like this:

Since Diana was SO generous in supplying me with ample Bead Soup,   I decided to make another piece with some of the gold, bronze and purple pearl beads and the handmade silver chain she gave me.  This  piece is done in a free form peyote stitch style.

I love how those clear crystal beads refracted the light into blue and pink !! Now I hope that you will visit Diana and see what she made HERE..  Below is a picture of  the beads I sent to her.

Diana took this picture and is happy to have me share it here today.

Visiting the other participants is one of the best parts of this event.  I hope you will go and see what they made.   The list is below.
